Melvin John Boer, age 84, of Sioux Falls, SD (formerly of Mitchell, SD) died Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the Centennial Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, December 8, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a 2:00 PM burial at the Highland Cemetery in Fairfax, SD. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 5:00 PM. Melvin John Boer, son of Herman and Winnie (Burma) Boer, was born February 18, 1930 on farm near Platte, SD. He attended various schools in the area and graduated from Platte High School in 1948. Melvin helped on the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army. He served in Korea from 1953 to 1955 and returned home after receiving his honorable discharge. While at home he continued to help on the family farm. Melvin was united in marriage with Luella Delany of Fairfax, SD on June 17, 1960. The couple lived in Bigelow, MN where Melvin worked for a farmer and cattle feeder. Later they moved back to South Dakota and Melvin again worked for a farmer and cattle feeder at a ranch near Winner, SD. They moved to Mitchell and Melvin was employed at Agland Coops pf Ethan and later at Cenex of Mitchell. Melvin and Luella enjoyed traveling on vacations with their children. In their retirement they enjoyed traveling on several bus tours. Grateful for having shared his life are his loving wife of 54 years, Luella Boer, Sioux Falls, SD; a son, Duane (Jackie) Boer, Sioux Falls, SD; a daughter, Linda Peterson, Alexandria, VA; six grandchildren, Megan, Brady, Sarah, Mary, Rachel and Stephen; two sisters, Muriel VanVuren, Platte, SD and Marjean (Rolf) Hope, Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, John Peterson; a brother, Henry Boer; a brother-in-law, Arie VanVuren; and a nephew, Darlyl VanVuren.
