Melvin Clarence Barington, age 78, of Mitchell, SD died Monday, December 4, 2017 at his home. Funeral services will be 6:00 PM Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the Will Funeral Chapel with inurnment at Servicemen's Memorial Columbarium at a later time. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Melvin Clarence Barington was born December 9, 1938 in Yankton, SD to Marvin and Emma (Alsager) Barington. Melvin grew up in Mission Hill, SD while attending Gayville, SD High school and graduated in 1957.
While growing up in the Gayville area, Melvin worked at many places in Yankton during his years there. In 1957, Melvin enlisted in the Army at Yankton, SD 260th Field Artillery. He then moved to Yankton, SD in 1960 where he then married Carolyn Jane Grosz on June 18th of that same year. During his years in the Army, he converted to the 147th Field Artillery and finally the 115th Signal Company. In 1961 he went to Fort Gordon, Georgia for field radio repair school. He was then activated in 1962 to Fort Riley, Kansas. He later then moved to Mitchell, SD and worked at the CSMS shop civil service as a field repairman. He also at that time worked in Rapid City, SD as a communication Sargent for the State of South Dakota where he taught communication classes for officer training school. In 1968 he joined the 665th Ordinance Company for radio repair. After 31 years of service in the South Dakota National Guards and 28 years of service at the CSMS shop civil service he retired in 1989.
At this time he continued to enjoy the rest of his life at his home on Lake Mitchell. During his years of life Melvin loved to hunt, fish, bowl, cheering on his NFL Giants, working in his garden, and taking pontoon rides on the lake with his wife of 57 years.
Melvin was a volunteer fireman for the City of Mitchell for 16 years, a member of the United Church of Christ, Moose Lodge, American Legion, Elks Lodge, and President of the Lake Mitchell Sportsman Club.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Carolyn, daughter Pamela Barington (Jack Winegardner) of West Park, FL, daughter Cynthia Barington (Shawn Dunlap) of Red Lion, PA, son Michael Barington of Mitchell, SD, son Marty Barington (MaryEllen) of Mitchell, SD; grandchildren Tyler Dunlap, Kassi and Kylie Barington; a great granddaughter Isabella Barington-Steele; a sister, Diana Spence, Yankton, SD.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Marvin Barington, sister Beverly Huber, and grandson Riley Flack-Barington.
