Obituary

Maynard "Bud" Winter, age 84, of Mitchell, SD died peacefully on Friday, April 19, 2019 after an extended, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and prostate cancer.   Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, April 27, 2019 at First Lutheran Church with burial and military rites at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, April 26, 2019 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.

Bud was born July 14, 1934 on the family farm near Parkston, SD and was the third of four children of Solomon and Theresia (Uttecht) Winter.  He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse through the 8 th grade then helped on the farm before joining the US Army in 1954 where he proudly served his country stationed in Germany.  He was honorably discharged in 1956.

During an evening of roller-skating and playing baseball at Island Park in Milltown, SD, he met Lena Guericke, who was attracted to his good looks, athletic ability and sense of humor.  They were united in marriage on December 7, 1958 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clayton, SD.  Bud was a faithful and loving husband to Lena for over 60 years and affectionately referred to her as "Mother Hubbard" or more recently, "Miss America".

By 1965 their family was complete with four daughters, and they moved to Mitchell, SD, where they bought a new home and he worked as a welder and then a clerk for the US Post Office for 24 years.  As a jack-of-all-trades, he was a very hard worker doing lots of odd jobs or tinkering in his garage.

He loved the outdoors and spending time on the water; boating, fishing and water skiing with his girls.  He always enjoyed motorcycles and was proud of his Harley Davidson.

Bud was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he loved singing tenor in the choir.  His faith and music were a very important part of who he was, and he was often times moved to tears in worship.  He was also a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.  He volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels and was a very active blood donor for decades.

Bud's favorite sport was baseball.  He also loved to bowl and golf (even got a hole-in-one).  He enjoyed attending DWU basketball games. As a lifetime member of the James Valley Community Center, one of his favorite past-times was playing pool.

Family time was always special and they spent many Christmases traveling to visit their kids. They loved attending and cheering on the grandkids at special sporting events and programs.  Family reunions and birthday celebrations were a highlight.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lena; four daughters, Nancy (Joe) Long, Ethan, SD, Connie (Mike) Miller, Tucson, AZ, Jody (Pat) Vojta, Longmont, CO, Julie (Brent) Zempel, Waconia, MN; eleven grandchildren, Corey (Erin) Long, Rosemount, MN, Amanda (Sharlyse) Long-Stanley, Sioux Falls, SD, Colin Miller, Tucson, AZ, Ross Miller, Santa Monica, CA, Sara (Marco) Mora, Mitchell, SD, Aubrey Miller, Tucson, AZ, Gabe Zempel, Fargo, ND, Austin Vojta, Broussard, LA, Emily Zempel, Los Angeles, CA, Madison Vojta, Tempe, AZ and Zack Zempel, Waconia, MN; five great-grandchildren, Sami Stanley, Alyssa Long, Kayla Long, Asher Stanley, and Bray Miller; two sisters, LaVerna Koth, Parkston, SD, Kathleen (LeRoy) Pedersen, Shoreview, MN; a brother, Roland (LaValle) Winter, Parkston, SD; two sister-in-laws, Alice Holzwarth, Freeman, SD and Arlene Guericke, Mitchell, SD; three brother-in-laws, Gilbert (Carol) Guericke, Las Vegas, NV, Eldon Guericke, Sioux Falls, SD and Roland Preszler, Sioux Falls, SD.
