Maxine L. Homan, age 89, of Devils Lake, ND (formerly of Mitchell, SD) died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Heartland Care Center, in Devils Lake, ND. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Maxine L. Berry, daughter of Charles and Pearletta (Allen) Berry, was born May 31, 1924 in Walker, MN. She attended school in LaPorte, MN and graduated from LaPorte High School in 1842. During wartime she worked as a welder in shipyards in Portland, OR. Maxine then returned to Walker, MN and was employed at the Silver Dollar Club. She was united in marriage with Francis "Bud" Homan on February 20, 1946 in Des Moines, IA . The couple lived in Wheaton, MN where Bud was employed at Red Owl Grocery Store. In 1946, Bud transferred to Red Owl in Mitchell, SD. The couple purchased the Brig from the Airbase in Mitchell and started the Brig Restaurant in 1946. In 1951 the restaurant was relocated to its current location. They sold the Brig Restaurant in 1971 but retained Gene's Sport Center. In the late 1970's, Bud sold Gene's Sport Center and retired. In their retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling and wintering in Mission, TX for 15 years. Maxine was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the Elks Lodge, the VFW, and former member of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her daughter, Julie Limerick, San Diego, CA; a son, Barry (Kim) Homan, Devils Lake, ND; five grandchildren, Rebecca Limerick, Andria Homan, Brianna Prickett, Brady Homan and Jaci Homan; three great grandchildren; a sister, Dolores Stedman, Mitchell, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis "Bud" Homan; a son, Brian Homan; a daughter, Susan Homan; her parents; four brothers; and three sisters.
