Mary Ann Hubers was born March 5th, 1941, to John H. "Shorty" Hubers and Mildred Nee Rietveld Hubers in Harrison, South Dakota. She graduated from Corsica High School and married LeRoy DeWaard, settling in Harrison shortly after. They had four children, twins Pamela & Paul, Douglas, and Mark.

Mary began work as a nurse's aide and housekeeper for Corsica Good Samaritan Nursing home in 1968 and soon after became their Activity Director and then Business Office Manager. While in that role, she studied for and received her Nursing Home Administrator's license and eventually took a job in Madison, South Dakota, in 1974 as the Administrator for the North American Baptist Nursing Home. During this time, Mary presided over a significant expansion of the facility. She was also active in the local chapter of Business and Professional Women and served in various leadership roles there, as well as in the state Nursing Home Association. She and LeRoy moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and eventually Sioux Falls, South Dakota, before separating in 1986.

Mary worked in numerous locations before retirement. She married Sylvan Knutson in 1989, eventually settling in Lake Preston, South Dakota. They enjoyed many happy years there, becoming an integral part of their community. Mary and Sylvan eventually moved into Dakota Sun Assisted Living in Volga, South Dakota, in 2023, and later Edgewood Memory Care in Mitchell, South Dakota, in 2024.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Sylvan, as well as her first husband LeRoy, her son Mark, and one grandchild.

She is survived by her sisters, Betty, Lois, and Carol, as well as her daughter, Pamela (Todd) Harris of Heber-Overgaard, Arizona, son Paul (Lori) of Atlanta, Georgia, and son Douglas (Angel) of Mitchell, South Dakota, seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
