Marvin Marv Hafner, age 82 of Mitchell died Thursday, February 14 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 16 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell with burial and full military rights to follow in Servicemens Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM with a 7 PM prayer service on Friday, February 15 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Marvin was born to Fred and Rosina (Huber) Hafner near Alexandria, SD on April 11, 1925. He was baptized at Zion in 1925 and confirmed March 17, 1940 at Zion of Mitchell. He attended grade school in Hanson County Public School, high school in Mitchell and Concordia in St. Paul, MN. After his schooling Marvin joined the US Army on September 9, 1950 where he served in Germany during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in August 29, 1952. Marv was united in marriage with Deloris Heer on June 14, 1953 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Menno, SD. To this union three children were born; Daniel Hafner, Karla Gunsch and Dennis Hafner. The couple farmed in the Letcher-Mitchell area for 45 years and also enjoyed spending time woodworking. Marv was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school and served on the Education Committee and Finance Committee. He also served on the township board in Perry Township of Davison County. He also held office in the VFW Post 2750 of Mitchell. He is survived by his wife Deloris Hafner, Mitchell, SD, his children; Karla (Kenny) Gunsch, Mitchell, SD, Daniel (Linda) Hafner, Mitchell, SD, Dennis (Jamie) Hafner, Spearfish, SD; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; his sister Vivian Buchmann, Mitchell, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Milton and a brother-in-law Fred Buchmann.
