Marvin W. Godber age 85 of Huron (formerly of Letcher) died March 2, 2011 at his home in Huron. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Letcher. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 PM Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 4 PM. Burial will be in Servicemans Cemetery in Mitchell.
Marvin was born January 6, 1926 at his Grandma and Grandpa Kanes home in Fulton, SD to Carlos and Cleo (Kane) Godber. In 1944 he graduated from Letcher High School. Marvin farmed with his dad after school until he was drafted in the US Army December 8, 1950. He completed his Basic Airborne Infantry training at Ft. Benning, GA. in April of 1951. He was deployed with Company A, 147th Infantry Regiment to Korea on August 1, 1951, he was wounded in action on September 24, 1951 on Heartbreak Ridge in Korea. His decorations include Purple Heart, Parachute Badge, Korean Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.
After his discharge we returned to Letcher and farmed. On September 5, 1953 he married Marvis Tingle. For 28 years Marvin was a rural letter carrier from 1958 to October of 1986.
Marvin was a 58 year member of the American Legion Tormey-Stack Post 93 of Letcher, 1994, 2008 and 2009 District 6 Legionnaire of the Year, served on the Selective Service Board for many years, was a member of the Letcher Saddle Club, Township Board, Trinity Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Board.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Marvis of Huron; children Sandi and husband John Schoenfelder of Huron, SD and Mark and wife Melissa Godber of Tea, SD; grandchildren Amber (Schoenfelder) Krogman and husband Darrin of White River, SD, Wade Schoenfelder of Letcher, SD, Bailey John Schoenfelder of Huron, SD, Curt Schoenfelder and wife Christina of Bellingham, WA., Josh Schoenfelder of Devils Lake, ND, Claire Godber, William Godber and Jesse Godber all of Tea, SD; great grandson Owen Krogman of White River, SD; sister Shirley (Godber) and husband Elmer Mickelson of Mt. Vernon; sister-in-law Jan (Godber) and husband Richard Cleland of Rapid City, SD; brother-in-law Volney Johnson of Nampa, ID and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Merlin Godber; sister Elaine (Godber) Johnson and cousin Garold Kingsbury; a niece and two nephews.
