Obituary

Dr. Marv Miller, Mitchell, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010 at Avera McKennan Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Visitation will begin at 12:00. Burial will be at a later date.

Marv was born on Jan. 2, 1937 in Crookston, MN. His family moved to Fargo where he graduated from Fargo High School. He attended
Jamestown College graduating cum laude with a B.A. in Philosophy.
Marv graduated from seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity at Drew University in Madison, NJ in 1961. He was ordained as a Methodist Minister at that time. After working as an assistant minister at Calvary Methodist Church in San Jose, CA; Marv pursued further studies at Graduate Theological Union and received his Doctor of Theology in 1963. During this time he also served as assistant pastor of Epworth Methodist Church in Berkeley, CA.

Marv began his teaching career at Dakota Wesleyan in 1971 where he was Professor of Religion & Philosophy. He developed and organized the annual Stark Lecture Series for the Mitchell community. He also played an instrumental role on numerous committees for the Dakota Wesleyan campus over the years.

Marv loved music and singing. He participated in many high school, college, church, and community choirs. He formed a barbershop quartet with his high school friends. They called themselves the Uncalled Four Quartet and performed together through seminary. Marv also directed a church choir in Sussex, NJ and a Fargo-Moorhead Songsters production of Gilbert & Sullivans Pirates of Penzance.

Marv was a loving husband to Linda Miller. He enjoyed his role as a father to Lisa & husband Frank, Jeff, Kara & husband Jason, and Nehemiah. He also loved being a grandfather to Amanda, Nick, Chris, Cole, Braden, and Hayes.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wills Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, monetary memorials will be directed to Dakota Wesleyan University for a student scholarship fund in honor of Marv.
