March 3, 1934 – June 13, 2021
Marlin Herbert Neugebauer, Platoon Sergeant with the SD National Guard, age 87, of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, June 13, 2021 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital from a fall he did not recover from. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, June 18, 2021 at Resurrection Lutheran Church with burial and military rites at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, June 17, 2021 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service and time of sharing beginning at 7:00 PM.
Marlin Herbert Neugebauer, son of Herbert and Rosina (Titze) Neugebauer, was born March 3, 1934 at the family home near Dimock, SD. He attended Washington Elementary and after graduation from the eighth grade, farmed with his parents until November of 1956. Marlin was then drafted into the US Army. He served in the Korean War and also two tours of duty in Kiesershlaten, Germany. In November of 1958, Marlin joined the SD Army National Guard. In January of 1959 he joined the 100 th Ordinance Company (665 th Maintenance Company). He earned the rank of SFC. Marlin was a skilled mechanic and inspector of the unit in Mitchell. He was also a competent marksman in high standing with the Championship National Guard Rifle, Pistol and Machine Gun Team in SD for 20 years. He was also nominated for Soldier of the Year in 1985. Marlin served on the Military Honor Guard for all military funerals and also marched in the parades for many years. He was very proud to serve his country for 38 years. The Guard was his life. Marlin's awards and commendations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2 awards), The Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (5 th Award), and 25 years of perfect attendance. He retired from the SD National Guard in September of 1990.
On June 16, 1961, Marlin married the love of his life, Marjean Ann Tiede at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. They had two cherished daughters, Marcie and Marita.
Marlin loved hunting big game. He hunted the Black Hills and shot several big Bucks and Antelope from the prairie. He also traveled to Canada several times Moose hunting. Bringing home large trophies was his pride and joy. He also loved fishing the Missouri River at the Big Bend Dam for paddle fish and brought home record numbers. Marlin enjoyed snowmobiling the Black Hills and the Big Horns. After retiring Marli and Marje loved traveling in their motor home to Arizona and Texas. They traveled the US and also traveled seven countries in Europe. Marlin later enjoyed dancing, playing cards and traveling. He was a Charter Member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church, the VFW, the American Legion, the Moose Lodge, the Elks Lodge and the Good Sam's Camping Club.
Marlin is survived by his daughters, Marcie (Tim) Brumbaugh and Marita Neugebauer (Mark Hicks), both of Rapid City, SD; his granddaughter, Whitney Sanders (Drew Diehm), Rapid City, SD; two great grandsons, Leedin Sanders and Rhett Chiaroni; his sister-in-law, VonDean (Keith) Smith, Owasso, OK; and many special cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marje in January of 2011 and his parents.
