Marie (Lewis) Vandever, 89, of Mitchell died Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Firesteel Health Care Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell with burial at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Marie (Lewis) Vandever was born October 31, 1922 on a farm near Jefferson, SD to Charles and Alma (Covey) Lewis. She grew up and attended school in Sioux City, IA. She was married to Walter W. Vandever in Sioux City, IA on September 21, 1940. They moved to Mitchell in 1951. She worked as the Activity Director at Firesteel Health Care Center for 10 plus years. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School, a member of the Mother's Chorus, FLCW, Tuesday morning quilters where she made and packed many a School bag for Lutheran World Relief. She was Director of Young in Heart Program and decorated the display case for many years. She was also a Doll Club Member, Davison County Extension Club member, and Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 77, First Lutheran Church. Marie was an Avid collector of dolls and plates. She also painted many pictures and wrote a cookbook for her family and a story book for her friends and family. She was well known by her grandchildren and many neighborhood children for her chocolate chip cookies, cow pies and ice cream sandwiches. Her home and heart were always open to any children around her to share a song or story. Grateful too for sharing her life three sons; Earl (Barb) Vandever, Mitchell, Richard (Darlene) Vandever, Fergus Falls, MN, Charles (Nancy) Vandever, Spearfish, SD; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a brother, John (Lorraine) Lewis of Dakota Dunes, SD; two sisters-in-law, Donna Lewis, Sioux City, IA, Frances Lewis, Salinas, CA. She was preceded into death by her husband, Walter Vandever; a sister Ellen McCormick and 5 brothers, Sam Lewis, Bill Lewis, Bob Lewis, Harold Lewis and Walt Lewis.
