Marie Alma Syreika, age 77, of Mitchell died Saturday July 24 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday July 27, 2004 at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Mitchell with burial at Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM Monday. Marie Grubl was born August 31, 1926 in Spearfish, SD to Paul and Edith (Tibbits) Grubl. She graduated from Sturgis High School in 1944. Marie was united in marriage with Walter J. Syreika on September 17, 1945 in Wilkes Barre, PA. The couple made their home in Sturgis. While in Sturgis, Marie was employed in the Supply Department of Ft. Meade from 1952 to 1980. She was also a part owner of a ceramic shop called the Clay House for several years. In 1986 they moved to Mitchell, SD. In Mitchell Marie was very active in the local Parkinson Group. Marie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Grateful for having shared her life are her three daughters, Peggy Whalen and her husband, John, Brookings, SD, Rose Gargiulo and her husband, Bud, Madison, AL, Diane Konechne and her husband, Dennis, Mitchell, SD; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four sisters, Donna Koemmpel, Massapequa, NY, Dorathie Larson, Santa Maria, CA, Lucy Wenz and her husband, Dr. E. P., Misson, TX, Teresa Graves and her husband, Ferm, Santa Marie, CA; a brother, Paul Grubl Jr. and his wife, Audette, Lancaster, CA; a step-mother, Netta (Blow) Grubl, Lemmon, SD. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Syreika on May 4, 1990; her parents; and an infant granddaughter. Memorials can be made to the Parkinson Foundation or First United Methodist Church, Mitchell, SD.
