Lumena Schoenfelder, 91, of Mitchell, passed away Monday, January 9, 2006, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be held at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ethan on Friday, January 13, 2006, at 10:00AM. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ethan with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Emsley Cemetery rural Ethan. Lumena was born to Matt and Katharina (Weber) Mayer on a farm near Ethan on December 1, 1914. Lumenas mother died during the flu epidemic in 1918, leaving Lumena and her sister, Marie, without a mother. Following her mothers death, she attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Dimock for several years until her father married Kathryn Thill. She then completed grade school at Mutziger School, west of Ethan. Following grade school, Lumena attended Parkston High School for two years and then continued on and graduated from Ethan High School in 1932. On November 14, 1933, Lumena was united in marriage to Pete Schoenfelder at the Church of the Assumption at Emsley, located one-half mile from the Pete Schoenfelder homeplace. Immediately following their marriage, Lumena was kept very busy caring for Petes parents, Joseph and Mary Schoenfelder, Petes brother, Matt, and also working outdoors on the farm. Soon after her marriage, Lumena began playing the organ and directing the choir at the church from 1935 until its closing in 1962. Grateful for having shared in her life are her children: Sister Jane Schoenfelder, Humboldt; Gerald (Carol) Schoenfelder, Tripp; Fran (Jan) Schoenfelder, Brookings; Helen (Joe) Puetz, Ethan; Rose (Joel) Nesheim, Mitchell; Louie (Joanne) Schoenfelder, Ethan; one sister, Marie Schumacher, Lead; a sister-in-law, Vel Mayer, Hutchinson, Minnesota; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and her extended family at the Avera Brady Assisted Living at Mitchell. Lumena was preceded in death by her husband, in 2002, her parents, her step-mother, Kathryn (Thill) Mayer and her half brother, Vilas Mayer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward the Emsley or Dimock cemeteries.
