Obituary

Luella G. Schladweiler, 97, of Alexandria SD died on Dec. 1, 2021, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab surrounded by her family. Mass of Christina Burial will be at 10:30 AM Monday, December 6, 2021 at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD.  Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM with a 6:00 PM prayer service at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial will be in St. Mary of Mercy Cemetery in Alexandria.

She was born the oldest of five children on June 14, 1924, to John and Frances (Janzing) Brutty at Epiphany, SD.  She attended St. Mary's Catholic school at Epiphany for 8 years and graduated from Burbank High School, Canova SD in 1942.  Upon graduation she began working in Mitchell, Sioux City, IA, and Denver CO.  She married Edward Schladweiler at Epiphany Sept 4, 1946.  They lived near Farmer on a farm until 1970 when they moved to Alexandria SD.  In 1971 Luella began working at Montgomery Furniture until retiring in 1986.  She was a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church, Sacred Heart League, N.C.S. of Foresters and Lifelong member of Fulton, Farmer and Epiphany American Legion Auxiliary #85 and transferred to the Alexandria Unit #41 in 2007.

Luella was a hard worker, loving wife, and mother.  She taught her children to be independent, capable, loving, and respectful.  She loved caring for her grandchildren as they grew up and shared with them the same values.  She was a great cook and baker, never letting her children leave home without goodies to fill their freezers.  Luella looked forward to her weekly card parties with friends.  Her greatest enjoyment came in dancing with Ed.  She loved to waltz and polka.  "Blue Skirt Waltz" was her favorite.  They floated around the area attending dances in Farmer, Mitchell and wherever they could share time with friends.

The greatest pleasure of Luella's life was her family. She is survived by three children Gary (Diane) Schladweiler of Scottsdale AZ, David (Patti) Schladweiler of Spearfish SD & Marilyn (Jeff) Schaefers of Alexandria SD and a daughter in law Evelyn O'Rourke.  Three grandchildren Chris (Kassandra) Schaefers of Fulton SD, Joe (Tiffany) Schaefers of Alexandria SD and Emily Schaefers of Mitchell SD.  Great grandson Cain Schaefers, sister LaVonne Schmit of Mitchell SD, brother Robert (Carol) Brutty of Brookings SD and many loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, her son Dennis, parents John and Frances Brutty, brother Donald Brutty, sister Marcella Ehlke, brothers in law George Schmit and Floyd Ehlke and sisters in law Delores Brutty and Peggy Brutty.
