Louise Agnes Kowalke was born at home on the family farm outside of Baraboo, WI on February 26, 1918 to Emil and Olga (Gall) Kowalke. She married Donald Metcalf of Reedsburg, WI on October 25, 1942. While her husband was deployed to the South Pacific theatre during WWII, she worked and continued to live in Baraboo where she was employed by Dr. Moon. Following Don's return home, she cared for him from his stay at the Great Lakes Naval Station Hospital and eventual move to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. In 1947 they purchased the Frosty Top Drive Inn in Rochester and ran it until 1951. In 1953 they purchased a Dairy Queen in Waukon, IA and operated it during the summer until 1955. In 1957 they purchased the Anthony Motel in Mitchell, SD and operated it until 1970. In 1970, she, along with Eleanor Andersen ran the Nearly Nu Consignment Store until 1974. After Donald passed away in 1975, she continued to live in Mitchell until her death.
Louise had always been a caregiver: for her husband as well as her parents in their later years. She is best known for always wanting to take care of whoever came to visit. She would meet you at the door and the first question would be "What can I get you?" You always ate and had coffee if you came to visit. She was devoted to her church, Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell and also delivered Meals-On-Wheels for 25 years.
She is survived by her two sons, Douglas (Renee) Metcalf, Brandon, SD, Jerry (Lynn) Metcalf, Mitchell, SD; grandchildren, Michelle Metcalf, Sioux Falls, SD, Shane (Michelle) Metcalf, Wasilla, AK, Tate (Aimee) Metcalf, Sisters, OR, Alison (Joel) Gardner, N. St. Paul, MN, Matthew Metcalf, Denver, CO; great grandchildren, Elizabeth (Brady) Jackson, Anna (Jimmy) Sliwa, Quinton (Hannah) Metcalf, Claire and Paul Gardner; great great granddaughter, Joann Jackson; a sister, Helen Ziegler, Baraboo, WI.
She is preceded in death her parents; brothers, Oscar, Lester, Clarence, Victor and daughter-in-law, Lynne Metcalf.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to Zion Lutheran Church.
