Leon Hagebusch age 83, of Mitchell, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 29, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a 7:00 PM prayer service followed by Loyal Order of Moose memorial service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites.
Lloyd Leon Hagebusch, son of Leonard and Viola (Thornberry) Hagebusch, was born November 27, 1925 in Vinita, OK. He grew up in Vinita, OK and after his schooling; Lloyd enlisted in the US Navy on December 31, 1941 in Tulsa, OK. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters involved in convoy duty in the Caribbean, the invasion of Sicily and Normandy, and troop transport in the Pacific. Lloyd was honorably discharged on January 5, 1946 in Norman, OK.
In 1947, Lloyd moved to Mitchell, SD. He was united in marriage with Maxine Abeln on October 29, 1951 in Mitchell, SD. The couple made their home in Mitchell. While in Mitchell, Lloyd was employed in the plumbing and heating industry in Mitchell for 50 years.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge. Lloyd was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion.
He taught his family to appreciate nature; Leon enjoyed traveling, long car rides surveying the country side. His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed mowing the church lawn and the Moose Lodge grounds as well as doing odd fix-its for them.
Grateful of having shared his life are his nine children, Mary (Clyde) Hathaway, South Lyon, MI, Ken (Mary) Hagebusch, New Prague, MN, Barb (Wayne) Wietgrefe, Saginaw, MI, Sue (Rick) Pence, Hartford, SD, Janice Oeltjenbruns, Hartford, SD, Lynne (David) Schmig, Mitchell, SD, Peggy (Jim) Bariteau, San Jose, CA, Tom (Pam) Hagebusch, Acworth, GA, David (Andrea) Hagebusch, Stevens Point, WI; 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; two brother in laws, three sister in laws and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine in 1989; his parents; two brothers, Keith at infancy and Sam, and two sisters Nola and Rosie.
Memorial may be directed to the family as a memorial fund has been established.
