Lilas O. Greenway, 94, of Mitchell, South Dakota, died Thursday morning, November 14, at Avera Hospital in Mitchell.

Lilas O. Greenway was born on April 21, 1925 in Jerauld County southwest of Lane to Jens and Olive (Miller) Nielson. Lilas obtained her nursing degree from the Methodist State Hospital on October 1, 1947 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Dakota Wesylan University on June 1, 1948. Her father wanted her to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing so she could teach, but once she began nursing she realized how much she loved it and never wanted to teach. She was a nurse at Methodist Hospital in Mitchell for over thirty years.

On March 5, 1949, Lilas was united in marriage to William C. Greenway in Mitchell. To this union two children were born, Glennis (Porter) Williams, Sioux Falls, SD and Randy (Bobbie) Greenway, Rapid City, SD. Lilas was a member of the Congregational Church of Mitchell, South Dakota. She was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother. She always wanted to be remembered as a good cook and she was! She lived independently for the last thirty years until she was hospitalized on October 13, 2019. She will be dearly missed.

Lilas is survived by her daughter and son , two grandchildren, Lacey (Jason) LaBarge of Severna Park, MD and Jesse Greenway of Rapid City, SD, three great grandsons, Isaac, Xavier and Julian LaBarge,  brother-in-law Thomas Greenway, sister-in-law Lavelle DeKramer and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1989, her sister and three brothers and many brothers and sisters in law.

Per her request, no formal funeral or visitation will be held, but a private gathering of immediate family will be held in the spring.
