Lila June Steiber age 90, of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Brookdale Portage in Portage, MI. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell with Rev. John Hansen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell.

Lila was born in Mitchell, SD on February 11, 1926, the only child of Elmer and Myrtle (Trank) Nelson. She was educated, grew up, raised her children and was employed in Mitchell. For a time she also was a violinist with the Mitchell Orchestra. Following World War II she married Raymond "Sam" Steiber on January 13, 1946, at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell.

Lila was baptized, confirmed and was a member of First Lutheran Church most of her adult life. She and her husband raised their two children, Linda Rae and Steven Raymond in Mitchell where she also was credit manager at J.C. Penny for a time. Lila was active in her church and was a friend to many in Mitchell as well as in New Braunfels, TX, where she and her husband wintered a number of their retired years. Her hobbies included travel, contract bridge and golf. She gave new meaning to adventure travel with her trip with husband, Sam, to Havana, Cuba, in 1957 where they enjoyed the clubs while also hearing the sound of sporadic gunfire in the hills outside the city.

Grateful for sharing her life are her daughter Linda (Orville) Smith  of Kalamazoo, MI; son Steven (Charlotte) Steiber of Evanston, IL; grandchildren, Todd and Daniel Smith; Samantha, Jacob and Emma Steiber; Jessica Mueller; Tyler and Jeffrey Bishop; four great grandchildren; sister-in-laws Dona MacDonald of San Diego, CA and Delores Jorgensen of Vermillion, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church or First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD.
