Obituary

Lester G. Porter was born May 3, 1919 in Mitchell to Leon and Bernice (Howard) Porter. He grew up in Mitchell and graduated Mitchell high school in 1936. He worked at Porter Olds car sales and then moved to the state of Washington. He entered the US Army in 1943, serving in the European Theater during WW II. He married Jane Benson and moved back to Mitchell after his discharge from the army. Lester married Vernice (Brown) Timperley December 31, 1964 at Mitchell. He worked as a car dealer for nineteen years and for Porters Restaurant and Hotel Supply for one year. Porters Restaurant Supply was sold to Maxwell Hotel Supply in Sioux Falls and he worked for them for sixteen years. He was a past president of the SD State Liquor Dealers and was a national director of the NLBA for two years. He was a past-commander of the American Legion and was a member of the VFW and Elks. He was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational. He introduced Father Don Murray of Sky Ranch for Boys to the SD State Liquor Dealers and then to the NLBA where they adopted Sky Ranch as their main benefactor. He is survived by his wife, Vernice of Mission, Texas; three children: Donald Porter and wife, Deni, Sunriver, Oregon; Gary Porter and wife, Sue, Pendleton, Indiana; Gregg Porter and wife, Jane, Beaverton, Oregon; and step-daughter, Connie Davis and husband, Dan, Castle Rock, Washington; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one brother, Howard Porter and wife, Joan, Whitesboro, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Maurice and a son, Roger In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sky Ranch for Boys, Sky Ranch, South Dakota 57724.
