Leota G. Smith. 101, of Mitchell, SD died Monday, Juy 30, 2012 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, August 3, 2012 at Will Funeral Chapel with burial and Eastern Star Rites at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Will Funeral Chapel. Leota Genevieve Hopkins, daughter of Russell and Hazel (Adams) Hopkins, was born July 27, 1911 in Letcher, SD. She attended elementary school in Letcher, SD. Her family moved to Mitchell, and Leota attended Mitchell Junior High School and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1930. As a young woman, she worked as a clerk at Finestein's. Leota lived most of her life in Mitchell, except for a few years in Canada. She returned to Mitchell in 1967 and was united in marriage with the love of her life, Duane Smith, on December 16, 1967. The couple lived happily on Lake Mitchell on South Harmon Dr. for over 30 years, and were very active in the community. Later they moved to an apartment on Norway Avenue. Duane passed away in 2006, and Leota moved again, to Countryside Living. While at Countryside Living, she enjoyed playing cards and bingo with the residents there. Leota was a resident at Firesteel Heathcare Center since January of 2011. She was very active in the Eastern Star for 50 years. Leota and Duane donated the funds for an elevator at the Masonic Lodge. She received a "Key" to the City of Mitchell at that time by the Mayor. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families. Leota was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Smith; her parents; a brother, Lyle Hopkins; five sisters, Wilma M. Riley, Henrietta France, Bernice Hunter, Vivian Hunter and Sheila Adolphson; three nephews, Robert Riley, Richard Riley and Russell Hopkins; a niece, Wardene Beck; and a great nephew, Adam Zanutto.
