Leonard VanOverschelde, age 87, of Letcher, died December 5, 2005 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls as a result of an accident at his farm. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Scholasticas Catholic Cemetery at Letcher. He was born at Letcher, SD on July 20, 1918 to Paul and Maria (VanDale) VanOverschelde. He lived and farmed in the Letcher area all his life. He married Mary Harding on November 28, 1939 in Alexandria. Leonard was a member of the Butler Township School Board until they closed and was a member of the Letcher School Board for a number of years. In his youth, he also was a Champion Cornhusker. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Mary, and his children: Eugene Van Overschelde (Nancy) Coppell, Texas; Darrel VanOverschelde, Loren VanOverschelde (Julie) all of Letcher; Margaret Timp, Sioux Falls; Janet Timp, Pierre; Phyllis Wright, Crystal, MN; Pat Guse (Ray), Watertown, MN; Beverly Fergison (Perry), Fort Dodge, IA; and Betty Kelly, Mitchell; eighteen grandchildren and two step grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Virgil, his wife, and family, a son, David, in infancy, daughter, Eilene, his parents and four brothers and sisters.
