Leonard A. Potter, age 84, of Mitchell, SD (formerly of Presho, SD) died Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at his home under hospice care. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, June 18, 2018 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with a 1:30 PM burial Monday at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Howard, SD. A memorial visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, June 17, 2018 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho, SD with a prayer service with rosary beginning at 6:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Leonard A. Potter, son of Glenn and Alice (Winegard) Potter, was born February 8, 1934 in rural Winfred, SD. He attended country school and after his schooling helped his father on the family farm. Leonard entered the US Army on February 2, 1955 and was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK.
He was united in marriage with Joan Mohr on July 6, 1956 in Howard, SD. The couple made their home at Ft. Sill, OK, until Leonard was honorably discharged on February 1, 1957. Then the couple returned to South Dakota and began farming near Carthage. They continued to farm near Carthage and Howard for a time. In 1968 they moved to Presho, SD where Leonard began his career with the SD Department of Transportation. He continued to work for the SD DOT for 27 years and then for Lyman County Highway Department for an additional ten years. The couple moved to Mitchell in July of 2017. They enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 15 years.
Leonard was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell, SD and a former member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho, SD. He was also a member of the Square Dancing Association and served as president of the SD Square/Round Dancing Association.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 62 years, Joan Potter, Mitchell, SD; four children, Sandy (Ken) Branine, Holabird, SD, Carmen (Michael) Derby, Rapid City, SD, Keith (Lucy) Potter, Salinas, CA, Carol (Keith) Lehr, Mitchell, SD; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Chuck; his parents; two brothers and a sister:, Little Jesse, Jesse and Margaret.
