Leona Zens, age 82, of Mitchell, died July 29, 2006 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM on Tuesday at Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in the Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. Leona was born on September 26, 1923, in Teutopolis, IL to Ferd and Sophia (Kemme) Thoele. She attended Plain Tree Grade School, rural Teutopolis, and Teutopolis High School. She worked in Glencoe, IL for several years after high school. On June 19, 1954, she married Tony Zens at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. For a time they lived in New York City where Tony was stationed in the Air Force. They farmed near Epiphany until moving to Mitchell in 1990. Leona cleaned the rectory in Epiphany for Father Arnold Petrosky, and enjoyed sewing and gardening. She was a member of Holy Three Kings Catholic Church in Epiphany, Holy Family Church in Mitchell, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Happy Mothers Club. She is survived by her husband, Tony, of Mitchell, one daughter, Susan (Terry) Olson, of Madison, SD, two brothers, Paul (Millie) Thoele, and Ralph Thoele, both of Teutopolis, IL and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, Deloris Thoele.
