Leona "Jean" Estabrook Mashtare age 80 of Mitchell, died Thursday, December 08, 2011 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, December 12, at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will begin 1 hour prior at Will Funeral Chapel at 10:00 AM. Jean Estabrook was born on March 23, 1931 in Sanborn County to Arlo and Pauline (Sonne) Estabrook. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Letcher High School. She later attended Notre Dame in Mitchell where she received her teacher's degree. She taught country school in Sanborn County. She later moved to California where she worked for the Santa Cruz County sheriff's office. She married James Mashtare on August 17, 1970 at Lake Tahoe, CA. In 1979 the couple made their home in Mitchell where they worked as property managers. In 1988 they moved to Rockport, TX and worked in real-estate until James passed away in 2008. September 2008 Jean made her home in Mitchell again. She is survived by her 3 children: Tim (Linda) Christensen of Mitchell, Penny Royals of Mitchell, and Polly (Doug) Sailer of Deadwood. 2 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers Doyle (Josephine) Estabrook of Woonsocket and Dennis (Geneva) Estabrook of Huron. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, a brother Carl, 2 stepsons Gary and David, and a son-in-law Wayne Royals.
