Obituary

Leon (Ole) North, age 90, of Mitchell, died April 1, at his residence under hospice care after a battle with cancer and alzheimers. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Tuesday April 5, at the Will Funeral Chapel with a burial to follow at Servicemens Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. A visitation will be held Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the Will Funeral Chapel. Leon was born October 7, 1914 to Frank and Mabel (Bates) North at Gary, SD. He served in the US Army during WWII and Korean Conflict. He married Bernice Whaylen, and then married Agnes Breen on December 9, 1951. He was later united in marriage to Betty Stransky February 6, 1971 in Huron. He farmed by Forestburg, worked for Bartholow Construction, and in 1972, he went to work for the State Fair Grounds in Huron. He retired in 1978 when they moved to Big Stone City. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 229 of Big Stone City, SD. In 1986 he was legionnaire of the year for district 4 and was active in other projects at the Legion Post. In 1988 they moved to Mitchell. He was a member of New Home Lutheran Church. He also loved to fish, hunt and go camping. He is survived by his wife Betty, two daughters; Gayla Vincent and Georgann Grier of Huron; six stepsons: Gene Bluhm of Watertown, Robert (Rae) Breen of California, Raymond (Nadeen) Stransky of West Jordan, Utah, Louis (Pam) Stransky, Fred (Carol) Stransky and Burt (Pam) Stransky all of Mitchell. Also numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and 3 special granddaughters: Stephanie, Staci, and Brooke Stransky. Also survived by 2 brothers: Ted (Joyce) of Huron, and Darwin (Ann) of Howard and one sister Caroline Styer of Huron. He was preceeded in death by his first two wives, his parents, two stepsons: Melvin and Elmer, 7 sisters: Goldie, Nellie, Ella, Alice, Madge, Sylvia, and Sarah Mae. 5 brothers Harold, Marvin, Lloyd, Delbert, and Arthur.
