Obituary

Leo L. Van Overschelde, age 68, of Mitchell, SD died Tuesday November 6, 2007 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. The visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. His family celebrates the life of Leo Leroy Van Overshelde, age 68, who went home to the Lord Tuesday, November 6. He died at Queen of Peace Hospital after a lengthy illness. Leo was born October 23, 1939 to Joseph Arthur and Gladys Elma (Phelps) Van Overschelde in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on the farm near Letcher, SD. He married Donna Anderson on June 23, 1962 and they raised their family in Mitchell, recently celebrating their 45th Wedding Anniversary. Leo worked for the City of Mitchell Street Department for 38 years. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Parish, Knights of Columbus, James Valley Senior Center, and the Mitchell Amateur Radio Club, call sign WAORN. He joined the Air Force in 1957, and was stationed in Germany. He took great pride in serving as an engine mechanic for an aerial demonstration team, The Skyblazers. He was a reservist in the South Dakota National Guard and retired after 24 years of service earning the rank of Staff Sargent. He was a Boy Scout and Webelos Leader at the United Methodist Church, Holy Family, and Holy Spirit Parishes. Leo volunteered for the Holy Family CCD program as teacher and monitor. He is survived by his wife, Donna; son Kevin (Kim Culver), daughter Kimberly (Jon) Gamber, daughter KarenVan Overschelde, son Kent (Kelsey Puck), and daughter Kaydee Van Overschelde, all of Mitchell. Leos surviving siblings are Rita (Gene) Gates of Pierre, Richard (Glenda)Van Overschelde of Huron, Ann Van Overschelde, Huron, and Raymond (Pam) Van Overschelde of Mitchell. Eight grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Peggy Van Overschelde and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lewis (in infancy)and Joseph Van Overschelde Jr.,
