Leo Mernaugh, age 84, of Letcher, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 26 at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell with burial at St. Scholastica Catholic Cemetery in rural Letcher. Visitation will be from 6 PM to 8 PM Tuesday, with a 7 PM prayer service at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Leo Maurice Mernaugh was born July 9, 1923 to S.C. Beck and Margaret (Schladweiler) Mernaugh in Mitchell, SD. He attended and graduated from Letcher High School in 1941. He attended State College in Brookings, SD where he played and lettered in football. He returned to the family farm in 1943 to care for his ailing father and to manage the farm. He served the Letcher Community for many years as secretary on the school board. He attended St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Letcher and served as an usher for many years until the church closed. Since then he has been a faithful member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church for several years. Leo was an avid sports fan of both high school and college sporting events. He generously supported numerous charities, community events and was beloved figure in the area. Grateful for having shared his life are his brother, Leroy, (Daisy) Mernaugh, Pierre, SD; a niece, Kay (Forrest) Mernaugh Nauman, Watertown, SD and their daughter, Jennifer Nauman of Vermillion, SD; nephews, Raymond (Glenda) Mernaugh and their children, daughter, Julie Mernaugh of Nashville, TN, sons, Kenny Mernaugh of Spearfish, SD; Kelly Mernaugh of Omaha, NE; Kevin (Debbie), Nick, Ryan and Faith Mernaugh of Corpus Cristi, TX; Paul (Lisa) Mernaugh of Anoka, MN; Larry (Linda) Keltgen Mernaugh of Adel. IA and their children, Michelle (Doug) Fishbach of Clive, IA., Bryan (Sarah) Mernaugh of Marshall, MN and Jon (Kristin), Mason and Jaele Mernaugh of Warner, SD; Pat Mernaugh of Letcher, SD., and his children, Seth Mernaugh, Guy Mernaugh and Marcus (Laura) and Evan Mernaugh all of Mitchell, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother Ralph. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Letcher Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Service.
