Leland Bill Somers age 91, of Mitchell died March 12, 2006 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at 2:00 PM Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain, SD. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Leland Bill Somers, son of Joseph B. and Nellie (VanSchaack) Somers, was born March 9, 1915 in Chamberlain, SD. He grew up and attended school in Chamberlain. After his schooling Leland ranched on the family homestead south of Chamberlain on the Missouri River. He was united in marriage with Laura Urban on June 5, 1936 in Chamberlain, SD. In 1947 he moved to rural Pukwana, SD, where Leland farmed until 1970. Soon after his retirement from farming Leland moved into Chamberlain and was involved in investment property ownership. Leland was then united in marriage with Bernadine (Mussman) Finegan on December 3, 1973 in Kennebec, SD. The couple made their home in Chamberlain and later in Ethan, SD. In August of 1977, they moved to Mitchell, SD where Leland was involved in investment property ownership in Mitchell. In the late 1990s, Leland and Bernadine became residence at Meadow Lawn Plaza. Leland will always be remembered as a man who enjoyed wheeling and dealing. He had a true heart of gold. He is survived by his wife, Bernadine, Mitchell, SD; five children, Richard W. Somers and his wife, Jan, Broomfield, CO, Shirley Andrews, Green Bay, WI, Sheila Woster and her husband, Chris, Elko, NV, Pat Thelen and her husband, Charles, Mitchell, SD, Julianne Lachnit and her husband, Dave, Mitchell, SD; a son-in-law, Keith Walton, Armour, SD; 20 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, one daughter, one granddaughter, and his former wife.
