L.E. "Shorty" Fischer, son of Christian and Christina (Frey) Fischer, was born April 10, 1927 in Bon Homme County, SD. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school in Bon Homme County. Shorty then attended high school in Tripp for two years. His father died and his three brothers were serving in World War II, so Shorty quit school and he became the head of the household and worked the family farm. Shorty was united in marriage with Maydean Schmidt on November 30, 1947 in Tripp, SD. The couple made their home on the family farm. In the late 1950's they moved into Tripp and were the owner/operators of Fischer Hardware Store in Tripp. In the early 1970's they sold the hardware store and moved to Winter Park, FL. Shorty was employed in the dog track business and eventually became the dog track judge. The couple moved to Mitchell in 2003. In his retirement, Shorty enjoyed gardening, wood refinishing and the love of nature. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Shorty was a former member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Tripp where he served in many positions at the church. He was also a former member of the Tripp School Board. Grateful for having shared his life are his two children, Chris (Sandy) Fischer, Sioux Falls, SD, Kathy (John) Milano, Gulf Shores, AL; five grandchildren, Paul (Jesse) Fischer, Collin Fischer, Adam (Amanda) Fischer, Frank (Christie) Casillo, Robert (Mary) Casillo; eight great- grandchildren; two sisters, Delores Cottrell, Davis, CA and Betty Lou Meyer, Parkston, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maydean Fischer on August 5, 2014; his parents; four sisters; and five brothers.
