LaVonne M. Thompson, age 80, of Mitchell, died December 30 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday at Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. LaVonne Mary Thompson was born to Harry and Henrietta (Koepke) Peart on June 8, 1924 in Letcher. She was baptized in June, 1938 at the Mt. Olive Church in Woonsocket. She graduated from Letcher High School in 1941 and received a four year teaching degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1969. She married James Thompson on June 3, 1950 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. She began teaching in a one room school house and continued in various school districts until her retirement in 1988. After her retirement she was very active in her church and community. She belonged to 8 and 40 (American Legion Auxiliary), Dine a Night, Retired teachers, Lioness, Meals on Wheels, Senior Citizens and was a circle member at Zion Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James E. Thompson, Son, David of Mitchell, Dan (Jackie), of Mission Hill and daughter, Donna (Mike) Rearick of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren, five great grandchildren; sisters, Mavis (George) Puetz, of Ethan, Joan (Pat) Metoyer, of Whittier, CA; brothers, Wendell (Ericka) Peart, Shadow Hills, CA, and Arland Peart, Whittier, CA, many nieces, nephews, as well as special friends and neighbors that will miss her. She was preceded in death by a son, Darryl, and a brother, Donald.
