Obituary

Lamar Clarence Waldrep, age 84, of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, April 8, 2012 at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center. Funeral services will be 6:00 PM Thursday April 12, 2012 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce, FL. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Born April 28, 1927 to David Lee and Evvie Parmley Waldrep in Anniston, Al. He joined the navy in 1944 at age 17. Lamar was a member of the original crew that commissioned the USS Audubon, he also served on the USS Vogelgesang. On Dec. 31, 1951 he married Veda Knight in Tuscaloosa, AL. Lamar held many jobs throughout his life including mechanic, masonry and apiarist which Lamar and Veda chose to make their lifes work. He also worked for the State of Florida as a bee inspector while they built their business. In 1960 they started transporting their bees from Florida the South Dakota for the summer, then back to Florida in the fall. Lamar had many hobbies. As a young man he ran moonshine and worked with a crew that ran a stock car and hunted alligators. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. Mostly he enjoyed his family and friends. Lamar and Veda retired to their home in Florida where he continued to garden and fish, they also entertained many friends from South Dakota showing them around Orlando, Disney World, Sea World and telling them stories of day's gone bye. In 2008 Lamar fell and hit his head, they moved to South Dakota then to be closer to family. He is survived by his wife and 2 daughters: Becky (Dean) Phillips , Lincoln, N.E. and Marlene (Dan) Hargreaves, Stickney, S.D; 4 grandchildren: Alana (James) DeVries, Lincoln, NE, Khristine (Eugene) Forehand, Groton, N.Y. Aaron Hargreaves and Caleb Hargreaves, both of Stickney, S.D; 5 great grandchildren: Ruthanne, Leah, Jeremiah, Hannah and Timothy Forehand of Groton, N.Y; 3 sisters Evelyn (Gerald) Horton, Heweytown, AL. Junita (Ray) Elsberry, Dora, AL. and Dorothy Hyde, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Arthur, Harold, Arviel and Ralph. A sister-in-law Edna and a daughter Rita Martin.
