Obituary

Kathyrn (Kay) Lebert, 81, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2022 at Edgewood in Pierre, SD after fighting Alzheimer's disease for several years. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell, SD. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:30 Rosary, Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Will Funeral Chapel.

Kay was born in Gregory, SD on November 24, 1941, to Lawrence and Helen (Fallon) Laur. As her siblings were older, she grew up virtually an only child with her parents' full attention, where she enjoyed spending time with them, her cousins, and working at her dad's grocery store. Kay graduated from Gregory High School in 1959 and then attended nurse's training, graduating from the Sacred Heart Nursing Program in 1962. After graduation, she returned to Gregory and worked in the Gregory hospital.

On October 4, 1963, she married Lou Lebert. To this union, five children were born, Randy (who died at birth), C.J., Connie, Kathy, and Jill. Lou and Kay moved to Huron while Lou attended college and began their family. Kay worked for the Huron Hospital, Huron Clinic and then for Hanson Saylor Clinic. In 1972, the family moved to Mitchell, South Dakota after Lou retired from his teaching career and began a new career with Pepsi. Kay stayed home to take care of the family until 1983 when she began working at St. Joseph's Hospital (now Avera Queen of Peace) as a surgical nurse, retiring on January 1, 2006.

While in Mitchell, Kay formed lifelong friendships with many, including several co-workers. Kay and Lou enjoyed their camping weekends, spending countless hours on the river water skiing and fishing, attending their children's activities and spending time with their extended family. Kay joined Holy Family Church upon moving to Mitchell and was a devout member. After Lou's death in 1993, Kay continued on, enjoying life as best she could without him. She enjoyed traveling with Jill, playing cards, attending her grandsons' activities, following the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, and later being a snowbird in the Arizona sun. Reluctantly, Kay moved to Pierre in May of 2019 and lived the remainder of her life at Edgewood where she received the best care from many devoted caregivers who quickly grew to love her as much as her family.

Kay is survived by her four children: C.J. Lebert, Seattle, WA, Connie (Mick) Heckenlaible, Pierre, SD, Kathy (Bob) Norwick, Pierre, SD, Jill Lebert, Worthington, MN; five grandchildren: Jordan (Shelby) Heckenlaible, Brandon Heckenlaible, Alec Norwick, Drew Norwick, and Alexandra Borsi; one great grandchild:  Griffin; two sisters-in-laws: Marie Spurling and Kathryn (Harold) Winter; one brother-in-law, Jim Lebert, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Randy; husband, Lou; her parents; one sister, Mary Ann Solis; and one brother, Joe Laur.

Kay's family expresses its gratitude to all the caregivers at Edgewood and Avera Hospice for their exemplary care and support in the final years of Kay's life. Memorials may be directed to Avera Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
