Obituary

Joyce J. (Scott) Lowery, 89, of Howard, died June 1, 2004, at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 9, at the Fedora Presbyterian Church. A private family burial will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Artesian. Joyce Josephine Lowery was born March 26, 1915, on the Willard homestead southwest of Artesian, SD. She was the sixth child and only girl of Charles Frederick Willard and wife, Josephine (Adair) Willard. Her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1918 and her father kept the family together until his death in 1928. His brother, Fay Willard and wife, Lucreta of Semans, Saskatchewan, Canada came to the funeral and Joyce went home with them. She received her elementary and high school education there and then moved with the family to Toronto, Ontario, Canada where she lived for two years. In 1935, she returned to the United States and saw her brothers for the first time in seven years. On Feb. 11, 1939, she married her childhood love, Dallas Scott of Artesian. They farmed in the area south of Artesian and Fedora until his death in 1954. They had made plans for a sale and had bought the caf in Fedora, so Joyce followed through with these plans and ran the caf until their son Adelberts graduation from high school, in 1956. She then sold the caf and moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where three of her brothers lived. Joyce married Victor E. Lowery of Des Moines on August 8, 1959. That fall they moved to Long Beach, California. She worked for Los Angeles County in the dietary dept. of Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, in Downey, CA and then as a supervisor in dietary at Long Beach General Hospital in Long Beach, CA. In 1967, due to Victors poor health, they moved to Kingman, AZ. Here she resumed he supervisory position at Mohave General Hospital and retired in 1977. Victor died in November, 1985 and she moved back to South Dakota in May, 1986. She bought a home in Fedora and later became a resident at the Good Samaritan Home in Howard. She enjoyed current events and kept them in a scrapbook. She also enjoyed collecting and finishing rocks, and loved animals and gardening. She is survived by her son, Del Scott and wife, Judy, Artesian, SD; grandson, John Scott and wife, Tammy, Crestline, CA and a step grandson Brent Felbob and wife, Bobbi, Victorville, CA and many great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dallas Scott; her second husband, Victor Lowery and five brothers, Ronald, Irvie, Harvey, Lynton and Lyle.
