Joseph M. Spielmann Jr., age 76, of Salem, SD (formerly of Plankinton, SD) died Monday, May 2, 2016 at Sanford USD Medical Center ER after a short battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 PM Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. John Catholic Church in Plankinton, SD with a 6:00 PM burial at St Peter Catholic Cemetery in Colman, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, SD with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.
Joseph M Spielmann Jr., son of Joseph and Irene (Meyer) Spielmann Sr., was born in rural Hartford, SD on July 23, 1939. He attended Chester Consolidated School, graduating in 1957. Joe worked at John Morrell in Madison and Sioux Falls for 10 years before attending Pipestone Vocational School for two years. He enrolled in an Ag banking class and later took a banking job at Wasbasso, MN. After four years he transferred to the F&M State Bank in Plankinton, SD. Joe served on the board of directors at the bank for 25 years.
He also served on the Upper Midwest Ag Credit Council for several years, the Plankinton City Council, Fish Lake Golf Course Board, Westkota Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, and was a consultant to the business department for the South Dakota State Training School. Joe retired from banking in 2002 as Senior Loan Officer and Senior Vice President of Farmer's and Merchant State Bank and continued to serve on the Board of Directors until July of 2003.
Joe loved the great outdoors; hunting, fishing and golf were his favorite pastime.
Joe married Nancy B. Streeter in June of 1959 and had four children, Kathy Jo Brink, Mitchell, SD, Mary Beth (Vernon) Niles, Plankinton, SD, Patrick (Okyo) Spielmann, McKinney, TX, Margaret (Allen) Beyers, Roscoe, SD; 14 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; his siblings, Nicholas "Bernie" (Bonnie) Spielmann, Colman, SD, James (Trudy) Spielmann, Wentworth, SD, Rose Mary (Merl) Mews, Boise, ID, Rita (Bill) Hessling, San Jose, CA, Eileen (Bob) Kramer,Fort Pierre, SD, Theresa Bunkers, Faulkton, SD, Richard (Dakota) Spielmann, Colleyville, TX, Elaine (Don) Sluti, Kearney, NE, and Dan (Gayle) Spielmann, Sioux Falls, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marie Dargen and Marilyn Wether; a brother, Thomas Spielman; two brothers-in-law, Denny Dargen and Jerry Wether; two nieces, Maria Mews and Janelle Kramer; and a nephew, Thomas Sluti
