Obituary

Joseph Kane, age 90, of Mitchell, died Friday, March 14 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 18 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Monday, March 17 from 6 to 8 PM with a Rosary at 7 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Joe was born on November 20, 1917 on a farm near Platte and Geddes to William and Katherine (Bechen) Kane. He grew up on different farmsteads and attended different country schools. He started High School at Platte and played football there. He then went to work for Bob Carter on a farm. Shortly after he left for Harris, Iowa for work. On February 25, 1941 he married Arley Carlson at Platte, SD. To this union three children were born; Regina, David and Pat. The first year of their marriage was spent in Harris, Iowa where he worked for H.T. Ringling. Moving back to Platte in 1942 they started farming for themselves. Leaving the Platte area and moving to Cavour, SD they farmed in the vicinity of Artesian and Carthage. In 1976 due to dry conditions, they sold their farm, equipment and cattle. After the farm sale they moved to Mitchell. Joe worked as a janitor at Whittier School, Park and Rec, Service Master and Dominos Pizza before retiring in 2007. Joe enjoyed rising real early in the morning and working in his garden and flowers. He liked to go fishing and spending time with his wife of 67 years and his grandsons. He was also a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Arley and two daughters, Regina (Dallas) De Nolf of Buena Park, CA and Pat (Dave) Linke of Mitchell and daughter-in-law, Marcy Kane of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother LeRoy (Gladys) Kane of Austin, MN; a sister Katherine Kopplin of IL; two sister-in-laws, Viola Allen of Garden Grove, CA and Henrietta Zutrenska of Mt. Vernon; two brother-in-laws, Albert Breuker of Harris, IA and Vic Fuhrman of Huron. He was preceded in death by his son David, his parents, two sisters, Viola Breuker and Marie Fuhrman and three brothers, Lawrence, Alfred and Bill.
