Obituary

Joseph Alvin Kahler, age 57, of Mitchell died February 12, 2005 at the Royal C. Johnson VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with burial at Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00PM to 8:00 PM Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with a Scripture Service followed by a Rosary beginning at 7:00 PM. Joe A. Kahler was born September 2, 1947 in Burke, SD. He grew up in Burke and attended school in Burke thru the 12th grade. He entered the US Army in 1966 and was stationed with the 2nd Brigade Saints 3 PLT, Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Joe was united in marriage with Carol Ann Lewis on January 9, 1967 in St. Louis, MO. He was first stationed in Germany. In 1967, Joe was stationed in Viet Nam where he served at heavy equipment operator and later as an instructor for heavy equipment operating. Joe was honorably discharged in 1969 and returned to Burke, SD. While in Burke he was employed by Gregory County Highway Maintenance. Later Joe was employed at various jobs in the Burke and Gregory area. The couple moved to St. Louis, MO in 1977. In 1979 they returned to Burke and then in 1984 moved to Mitchell, SD. Joe was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a former member of the VFW. In his free time he enjoyed fishing. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Carol Ann Kahler, Mitchell, SD; three children, Amy Haag and her husband, Gary, Fulton, SD, Daniel Kahler, Mitchell, SD; Dana Kahler and her fianc, Chris Tuschen, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren; a brother, Duane Kahler and his special friend Mary Feyereisen, Gregory, SD; two sisters, Barbara Petersen and her husband, Don, Gregory, SD, Janice Smith and her husband, LeRoy, Burke, SD; his mother-in-law, Leota Lewis, St. Louis, MO; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; twin grandchildren in infancy; a brother-in-law, Edward in childhood; and his father-in-law, Marvin Lewis.
