Obituary

Joseph Wayne Bugs Hoffman Jr. age 74, of Letcher, SD died Monday June 30, 2008 at Avera Queen of Peace ER. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, SD with Msgr. Steve Barnett officiating. Burial with military rites will be at St. Scholasticas Cemetery in Letcher, SD. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Will Funeral Chapel with a rosary and prayer service beginning at 7 PM. Joseph Wayne Hoffman Jr., son of Joseph and Eva (Swank) Hoffman, was born October 9, 1933 at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on a farm near Letcher, SD and attended school in Letcher, graduating from Letcher High School in 1951. After his schooling Joseph entered the US Army in 1953. Joseph was united in marriage with Patricia Vermeulen on January 3, 1955 at St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Letcher. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1955. The couple returned to a farm in the Letcher area. Joseph farmed and was employed with the South Dakota Department of Transportation for 26 years. His greatest pride was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joseph was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, SD and a former member of St. Scholasticas Catholic Church in Letcher, SD. He was a lector at St. Scholasticas Catholic Church and St. Michaels Catholic Church. Joseph served on the Letcher School Board, the Letcher Township Board and the St. Scholasticas Cemetery Board. He was the unofficial historian for the Letcher area and was a member of the Tormey Stack American Legion. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Patricia, Letcher, SD; seven children, Michael (Bonnie) Hoffman, Parkston, SD, John (Deb) Hoffman, Alliance, NE, Robert (Lynn) Hoffman, Mt. Vernon, SD, Tony (Krishnar) Hoffman, Alvin, TX, Patrick Hoffman, Huron, SD, Tammy (Darrell) Wallace, Santa Fe, TX, Tim (Stacey) Hoffman, Letcher, SD; 19 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; a brother, Bill (Marlene) Hoffman, Letcher, SD; two sisters, JoAnn (Woody) Jewell, Jacksonville, FL, Donna Strong, Pukwana, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leo and Glen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Davita Dialysis Unit (525 N. Foster, Mitchell, SD 57301).
