Dr. John Wingfield, 84, died on Monday, November 29 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.  Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, December 2 at Will Funeral Chapel, with a 6:00 prayer service.  Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm Saturday, December 3 at Mitchell First United Methodist Church.  Burial with Military Rites will be on Monday, December 5, 2022 in Graceland Cemetery at 1:00 pm.

He was born on April 10, 1938, to Frank and Dorothea Evelyn Wingfield in Parkston SD.  He graduated from Parkston High School and then attended Dakota Wesleyan University.  In 1963 he graduated with honors from the Creighton School of Dentistry in Omaha Nebraska.

In 1963, he married Mary E. Hester in Omaha.  They then moved to Japan, where he served as a dentist in the US Army from 1963 to 1966 in Yokohama and Tokyo.  After his service in Japan, they moved to Mitchell, where they reared four daughters and where he practiced dentistry from 1967 to his retirement in 2014.  He loved his profession and cared deeply about his patients.

His many interests included traveling (visiting Germany, Switzerland, the British Isles, and much of the US), biking, boating, kayaking, skiing, walking, genealogy, baking, and brewing fantastic beer.  He proudly shared his pies, beers, and wines with family and friends.  He also enjoyed music, especially Celtic music, and played the clarinet, violin, and ukulele and volunteered as a music librarian for the Lyricwood Orchestra.  Reading was another passion, and he was rarely without a book.  His home was filled with family, books, music, and pets.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Ruth Wittenhagen (Larry), Deb Wingfield, and Meg Grohs; grandsons Chris Liebau and Jaxson Wittenhagen (Sierra), and granddaughters Stephanie Fore and Esme Grohs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his daughter, Judy Wingfield.
