John W. Vickers age 82, of Mitchell died Tuesday September 21, 2004 at Firesteel Heathcare Center. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday at the First United Methodist Church Chapel with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel. John was born on April 19, 1922 to Mernie and Minnie (Hinrichs) Vickers at Claremont, SD. He attended school in Claremont. He worked at Boeing Aircraft in California until he joined the Air Force in 1943 and worked as an airplane mechanic. He married Mary Parkes on November 9, 1945, at Langford, SD. In February, 1946, he was discharged from the Air Force. They lived in Claremont until moving to Mitchell in 1948 where he worked for the International Harvester Implement Dealership. He then worked for Lindekugels Construction as a mechanic until 1964. He worked in maintenance at 3M Manufacturing until his retirement. He spent his retirement years traveling the United States and Europe. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. John is survived by his children: Judith Cain and husband Tom, of Sioux Falls, and Wayne Vickers and wife, Chris, of Mitchell; a sister, Alice Olson, of Langford, SD; six grandchildren: Jodi Lambert, Janean Christensen, Chad Vickers, Jennifer Doyle, Wade Vickers and Austin Vickers and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1981; his parents; brother, Don Vickers, and two sisters, Mernis Wallace and Arlie Vickers.
