Obituary

John D. Tyler, age 63, of Mitchell, SD died Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Avera Queen of Peace ER. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at American Legion Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. John was born June 15, 1948 to John and Virginia (Wermers) Tyler in Mitchell, SD. He attended country school and graduated from Ethan High School. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army in 1968, which he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, where he was highly commended for his service. He honorably discharged in 1970. On April 27th 1972, he married the mother of his four children, Alice Heisinger with whom he shared 27 years of marriage. John was a member of the Ethan Rural Fire Board where he served as treasurer from 1983 to 2008 and on the Ethan rural Fire Protection District from 2008 to 2010. He was a lifelong member of Holy Family and Holy Spirit Catholic Churches and member of the American Legion and VFW. John worked in the construction industry after returning from Vietnam until November of 2010, at which time re retired. He valued hard work and a job done to perfection. He loved his children and grandchildren with whom he was looking forward to enjoying his retirement years. John always enjoyed helping those he loved, whether it was building cabinets in a bar, building a house, of doing whatever was asked of him. John spent the last 10 years of his life with his special friend Almyra Granger. Thankful for having shared his life are his children, John and wife Amy, Stephanie and special friend Shane Comp, Jason and special friend Nicole Callies; 7 grandchildren; his "son" Bryan Heisinger; brother James Tyler and sister Jean Nelson; ex-wife Alice Mentele; special friend Almyra Granger; the entire Heisinger family and his many nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors and loved ones, as well as his faithful companions Elvis and Pepper. Preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, an infant son Joseph and his father and mother-in law.
