Obituary

John James "Jim" Tobin, 84, of Alexandria, died April 22, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Ethan Hill Crest Cemetery. John James "Jim" Tobin was born March 14, 1929 in rural Ethan to John Arthur Tobin and Bessie Brink. He grew up and attended school in the Ethan and Plano areas. He started working on the farm and milking cows at an early age, where as his father worked construction. In his late teens and early twenties he worked and drove truck for Mike Wittstruck of Ethan and then for a few years for Dale Anderson of Mitchell gentling, training and trading horses. In February of 1955 he married Laurie Friedel of Ethan. He then farmed, had a dairy and raised some outstanding horses. He was an avid horseman and played apart in starting up many of the horse, roping and rodeo clubs in this area. Jim is survived by his wife Laurie of Parkston; two sons Daniel Lee of Alexandria and his special friend Audrey Schrag of Bridgewater, John James Jr. and his wife Marilyn of Alexandria; one granddaughter Nikki (Tony) Bartscher; four great grandchildren Ty, Colter, Justin and Brody all of Alexandria and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded into death by his parents; one sister, Virgina and her husband and Jim's brother-in-law Darrell Riggs; three brothers, George Tobin of Menno, SD, Patrick Tobin of Denver, CO, Gene Tobin of St. Cloud, MN; his wifes parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Friedel of Ethan; brother-in-laws Leonard Friedel, Laurice Friedel; and cousin and brother-in-law John Johnson.
