John Douglas Splitt, 89, of Mitchell Passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Firesteel Healthcare. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, June 18, 2013 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM First Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Servicemen's Cemetery in Mitchell. Rev. Max Miller will be officiating. Doug was born June 9, 1924 in Mitchell to Gus and Eva(Newman) Splitt. He lived most of his life in Mitchell, attended School and later worked for Tessier's Sheet Metal. He retired in 1985 after 42 years. Doug was a veteran who proudly served from 1942-1945 in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. After returning from the war he married his high school sweetheart, Alice Koop, in 1946. They had 67 wonderful years together. He always enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and a good game of Pinochle. Doug and Alice always enjoyed traveling to and visiting their children and grandchildren whenever they could. Doug volunteered at the SD Amateur Baseball games for many years as well as being a volunteer firefighter. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, the Elks Club, VFW and the American Legion. Doug is survived by his wife, Alice, and their 5 children; Paula Chandley (Paul), Steven Splitt (Debi), Teresa Quist (Russ), Lisa Johnson, and Kelly Splitt (Becky). He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Erin Chandley, Lisa Chandley and Brianna Splitt of California, Jessica Johnson of South Dakota, Andrew Splitt and Haley Splitt of Wisconsin, and 1 great grandchild, Isabella Luna of California and two step grandchildren; Emily Quist of California and Matt Quist of Minnesota. Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister (Betty Bille) and one brother (Richard Splitt). In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to the VFW of Mitchell, SD.
