John LeRoy Shepard, 83, of Mitchell passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025 at his residence. Funeral services with military rites will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at Will Funeral Chapel; followed by military rites. Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Huron, SD.

John was born on December 11, 1941 in Miller, SD to John M. and Clara (Willard) Shepard. He attended and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. John enlisted in the Army on July 7, 1966 and served until February 11, 1970.

John lived in several different places before settling in Mitchell. He was a member of Modern Woodman. John enjoyed hunting, woodworking, collecting guns, fishing, camping, having coffee with friends, and enjoying time with his friends and family. He loved animals, dogs, cats, and horses and owned several throughout his life.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children; Deb Picchietti, David Shepard, Don Shepard, his step-son, James "Jim" Hiemstra, and grandchildren; Austin Shepard, Zach Picchietti, and Mellissa Shepard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Patricia, brother, Sonny, and sisters; Clara, Leona, and Leota.
