Obituary
John R. McNary age 83, of Mitchell died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Avera Queen of Peace. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 10:30 AM at the First Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 PM at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 and a Masonic rites service to follow. Burial will be in the Servicemans Memorial Cemetery with military rites.
John Richard McNary was born in Mitchell, SD on January 6, 1926 to Sumner Harvey and Mary (Hendrickson) McNary. He grew up in Mitchell and graduated from high school in 1944. He entered the US Army during WWII in May of 1945 and was honorably discharged in February of 1947.
He returned home and married Shirley Larson on March 22, 1952, and the couple farmed in the Mitchell area until his retirement in 1996. John was also employed as a salesman for the Gamble and Tempo Stores and employed with the ASCS offices in Mitchell.
John had a strong faith and was a member of the First Lutheran Church all of his married life. He actively served his church on several boards and committees and was a Sunday school teacher for ten years. He enjoyed working with youth and was a 4-H leader for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, Resurgam Masonic Lodge #31 when he was honored as Mr.Mason in 2007, El Riad Shrine and Starlight Chapter #41 of Eastern Star.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Shirley of Mitchell; children Barbara Murray (Mark Quigley) of Sioux Falls, SD, Nancy (Jon) Gonsor of Pierre, SD, Pamela (Ray) Keppen of Scotland, SD, John (Jerrilyn) McNary of Madison, SD and Debora McNary of Vermillion, SD; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; brothers Duane (Sharon) McNary of Las Vegas, NV, Jerry (Sharon) McNary of Mitchell; sisters Belle (Melvin) Herman and Jonna Lou (Carl) Wolf of Woonsocket, SD and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceded in death are his parents, step mother Irene McNary, mother and father in law Melvin and Velma Larson, grandson Matthew John McNary, brothers Harvey and Robert McNary, infant brother Carroll and a sister Edith Stevens.
A memorial fund has been established in Johns name.
