Johnny Dean Backes

Johnny Dean Backes, age 68, of Emery, SD passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026 from health complications. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 25, 2026 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, July 24, 2026 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 PM.

John Backes, son of Elmer and Esther (Heiman) Backes, was born July 1, 1958 in Parkston, SD. He graduated from Emery High School and later attended Mitchell VoTech. He enjoyed doing construction jobs with his brother, Kenneth and worked on many homes and projects through the years. He enjoyed older country and rock and roll music from the 60’s and 70’s. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends. John has been a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD.

Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Todd (Dee Dee) Backes of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mavis Hofer of Sioux Falls, SD; many nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Esther Backes and his brother, Kenneth Backes.
