Joe J. Weiland, age 85, of Mitchell, SD (formerly of Ethan, SD) died September 11, 2012 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, October 5, 2012 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Ethan, SD. Joe J. Weiland, son of Louis and Ottilia (Scheich) Weiland, was born June 15, 1927 in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on the family farm near Ethan, SD and attended school in Ethan. Joe graduated from Ethan High School in 1945. After his graduation, he farmed with his father. On November 17, 1950, Joe entered the US Army and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal on November 16, 1952 and returned to the Ethan area and farmed with his brother, Urban Weiland. In 1956, Joe began working with the South Dakota Livestock Sanitation Board. In the mid 1960's, he then became a Meat Inspector for the State of South Dakota. Joe retired in 1993 after 37 years of service with the State of South Dakota. He was a member of the American Legion Coacher-Goetsch Post in Mitchell. Joe enjoyed raising race horses and reading. Survivors include his family, a brother, Louis (Barbara) Weiland, Hager City, WI; two sisters, Mary Bersten, Vallejo, CA, Dorothy Bras, Seattle, WA; a special friend and family;0 numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Urban Weiland; a two sisters, Monica Weiland and Margaret Motzer.
