Joan Herman age 88, of Mitchell died Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at Firesteel Health Care Community. Private family services will be held Monday at Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery.

Joan Katherine Herman was born January 5, 1930 in rural Hutchinson County, SD to Albert and Josephine (Nolz) Schoenfelder. She was taken by horse-drawn wagon shortly after her birth by her father to be baptized at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dimock, SD. She attended country school in Hutchinson County and graduated 8th grade in May 1945. At that time, Joan began her lifelong journey of caring for children, when she was sent at age 15 to be a nanny in Parkston, SD.

Joan married Edwin Donald Herman on October 26, 1953 at the Emsley Catholic Church, rural Dimock, SD. After living in rural Hutchinson County, they moved to Mitchell in 1954. Joan was a

Housewife, mother and childcare provider, along with being a wonderful cook. She took great pride in her home which she and Edwin moved into on June 2, 1961 and in which she still resided till May 24, 2018. At that time, she entered Firesteel Healthcare Community.

Joan enjoyed crossword puzzles, excelled at embroidery and quilt making and loved watching Wheel of Fortune. She was a life-long Catholic and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell.

Joan is survived by her children: Joyce (David) McGee, Mitchell, SD; Robert (Lori) Herman of Mitchell, SD and Lisa (Doug) Oelrich, Watertown, SD. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Matthew (Elizabeth) McGee, Mitchell, SD, Kiirsttnae (Andrew) Leggott, Belle Fourche, SD, Corttnee (Chris) Schmidt, Lead, SD and Kelly Oelrich, Watertown, SD and her great-grandchildren; Jace Herman, Ayden Kummer, Michael McGee and Steevy Schmidt. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Edwin on October 28, 2007, her parents, and on great-grandchild.
