Jean Marie Horstman, age 66, of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, July 12, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.

Jean Marie Thuringer, daughter of William and Emma (Weber) Thuringer, was born March 19, 1947 in Parkston, SD. She grew up on the family farm near Parkston, SD. At the age of eight, Jean moved with her family into Parkston, SD. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Parkston and graduated from Parkston High School in 1965. After her schooling, Jean was employed as a waitress at the bowling alley in Parkston.

Jean was united in marriage with James Horstman on July 2, 1966 in Parkston, SD. The couple made their home in Parkston for a short time before moving to Mitchell. While in Mitchell, she was employed at Lueken's Bakery for a time before raising the couple's children. After the children were raised, Jean was employed at various businesses in Mitchell.

She enjoyed working on jean quilts for her grandchildren, traveling, playing cards, doing puzzles, and watching Nascar Races (especially if Jimmie Johnson #48 was winning). Jean loved seeing and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, sister, mother and grandmother.

Jean was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, James Horstman, Mitchell, SD; three children, Mark (Starla) Horstman, Dallas, TX, Craig (Dawn) Horstman, Tampa, FL, Sheri (Joshua) Steig, Corona, CA; five grandchildren, Ethan Horstman , Hunter and Ashley Horstman,Taylor and Kaitlyn Steig; two sisters, Betty Roth, Parkston, SD, MarJo Vilhauer, Parkston, SD; two brothers, Ralph Thuringer, Parkston, SD, Norman (Mary) Thuringer, Mitchell, SD; a sister-in-law, Lois Thuringer, Mitchell, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Luverne Thuringer; a sister, Carola Thuringer; two brothers-in-law, Albin Roth and Stanley Vilhauer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
