Janet Faye Prouty, 90, of Alexandria, South Dakota passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Alexandria, South Dakota. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM with a 7:30 prayer service Tuesday, February 18, 2020 the church. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
Janet was born January 22, 1930 to Melvin and Fern Olsen in Alexandria, South Dakota. She grew up and attended school in Alexandria. Janet married Donald Prouty on September 12, 1948 and worked as a farm wife and then worked with Donald in road construction. After Donald had a stroke Janet took care of him, taking him to all his appointments as well as cleaning houses and other businesses to help financially and maintain the household until his passing on August 5, 1999.
At the age of 89 she began taking care of pets for people when they needed to be gone or go on vacation. She made a point to make sure everyone on her list got a birthday and Christmas card. Janet has always given to the needy families and welcomed people into her home.
Janet loved spending time with her family, enjoyed taking care of cats and was always willing to help those in need.
Grateful for having shared her life are her three children; Donald (Betty) Prouty, Alexandria, SD, Shirley Aull, Excelsior Springs, MO, and Tom Prouty, Alexandria, SD; a sister, Carol Spraig, Salem, OR; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four children, Barb, Ervin, Joe, and Baby Prouty; as well as one sister, Gayle.
