James "Jim" Robert Freeman, age 82, of Mitchell, SD died Monday, May 21, 2018 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, May 25, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday, May 24, 2018 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Jim Freeman, son of Don and Ruth (Tanner) Freeman, was born August 7, 1935 in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on a farm southeast of Ethan, SD and graduated from Ethan High School in 1953. After his schooling, Jim was employed in road construction and carpentry work.
Jim was united in marriage with Marlys Thelen on November 24, 1956 in Parkston, SD. The couple made their home in Dimock for a short time before moving to Mitchell in the early 1960's. Jim owned and operated a flooring installation business called Freeman Floor Crafters for 35 years. After retiring for the flooring business, he was employed at the Daily Republic and at Walmart as a maintenance/custodian and later as a greeter. Jim eventually made his home at Wesley Acres which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Jim was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the James Valley Community Center. He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry work, dancing, bowling and calling bingo at the JVCC. Jim enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the Mitchell Kernel, DWU Tiger, Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
Grateful for having shared his life are his three sons, Bob (Judy) Freeman, Mitchell, SD, Ron Freeman, Albert Lee, MN, Dan (Dana) Freeman, Omaha, NE; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three brothers, Dick (LaVonne) Freeman, Conroe, TX, Larry (Twyla) Freeman, Iowa City, IA, Mel (Jean) Freeman, Ethan, SD; a sister, Carol Freeman, Minneapolis, MN; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys Freeman on June 15, 2003; his parents; a brother and sister in law, Lou and Lorraine Sudbeck.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Mitchell Heart and Sole Cancer Walk.
