James Mashtare Jr. age 82 of Rockport, TX formerly of Mitchell died Monday, September 8, in Rockport, TX after a lengthy illness. Graveside services will be 10:30 AM Friday September 26, at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Services are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel, Mitchell, SD James Jr. was born on February 24, 1926 in San Diego, CA to James and Ida (Allen) Mashtare. James attended and graduated high school in San Diego, CA. He enlisted in the US Navy and served in WWII and in the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, James worked in law enforcement in California for 22 years. During that time he meet and married Leona Jean (Estabrook) on August 17, 1970 at Lake Tahoe, CA. James also spent 15 years on the volunteer fire department. In the early 1980?s the couple made there home in Mitchell, SD before moving to Texas in 1988. James is survived by his wife Leona Jean, 3 children: Polly (Douglas) Sailer, Deadwood, SD; Penny Royals, Mitchell, SD; and Timothy (Linda) Christensen, Mitchell, SD. 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons: Gary and David Mashtare, and a son-in-law Wayne Royals.
